First and last paragraph of The Haunting of Hill House

When re-reading the first and last paragraph of The Haunting of Hill House, I cannot help but to compare Hill House to Eleanor.  Breaking the first and last paragraph down, each part seems to correspond to characteristics of Eleanor.  First Hill House is mentioned to be not sane and one can argue neither is Eleanor.  As a reader, one may constantly question the reliability of Eleanor as the narrator and whether the events are going on in her head or if the house is making her crazy.  The next part of the paragraph states that Hill House stands by itself.  Eleanor can be classified as a loner, having no friends and no family essentially.  It is then mentioned that Hill House holds its darkness within.  On the outside, Eleanor may seem like a normal enough character, but inside she constantly has fanciful thoughts and even thoughts of hatred towards her companions in the house.  The next line states that Hill House has stood for eighty years and could stand more.  This seems to be the only line that does not compare well with Eleanor since Eleanor is only 32 years old and potentially dies in the end. However, maybe her spirit lives on, in the house and it could remain there for many years to come.  The lines following explain how the house is upright, firm, sensible, and silent.  Eleanor is a character that could be seen as both sensible, before coming to Hill House, and silent because she was oppressed by a family who was upright and firm.  The last line states that whatever walked at Hill House, walked alone.  This once again shows how Eleanor is a lonely character who is always in her own thoughts and although she interacts with the characters, she also seems alienated from them.  Overall, I feel that the repetition may be important to introduce the reader to not only the house, but its main character and closes with the same paragraph to reinforce how similar the two were or how similar they became in the end.
