The Haunting of Hill House

As I was reading the book, I noticed the importance of family and the repetition between Eleanor and Theodora. They continued to say that they were related or cousins. When speaking about their own families, they were rather rude and did not care much about the concept of family. There tone was silly because they made fun of the idea of what a real family was like. For example, Theodora states, “a thousand uncles,” this hyperbole implies the humor they see in family. They both can relate to each other when describing and talking about this concept. Do they joke about family because they no longer have any? Eleanor sometimes feels it was her fault her mother died because she was the one that never woke up.
