More than in any of the other stories we have read, there is
some authority figure that the character must fight against or hide from. In “The
Father-Thing”, it’s the child’s parents he must work against. In the Chromium
Fence he’s fighting first against an imposed two party system, then eventually
he fights the Purists. “We can Remember it for you Wholesale” has this a group
with almost absolute strength, they read his mind and break into his apartment.
Each of these stories has an impossibly powerful force that is being fought
against.
