Oppression

The Word for World is Forest had a very interesting theme about slavery and oppression of the indigenous people of another planet, Athshe. Oppressing a community, such as in the manner that the Terrans did to the Athsheans, it actually stimulates new and potentially unwanted effects for both parties involved. When someone is inhibited, it leads to novel ways of living and thinking. Being in a negative environment, the newer ideas will most likely be negative as well. Such was the case when Selver’s wife died, he dreamt of war, which no one had dreamt of before. He then shared his dream with the rest of Athsheans and planned a revolution. They now saw the Terrans differently and were now intentionally killing the Terran women off. Oppression led to their revolt and made a once peaceful people, learn to fight back and kill.
