The Danger Wood is a very well written short story. Barnes and Due do an excellent job keeping the reader on the edge of their seat anticipating what is to come next. First of all, the theme of the story is only revealed half way. This slow plot development keeps the reader questioning about what has happened in this post apocalyptic world. We soon realize that the world is rampaged by mutant humans. Kendrick's parents transformed into these creatures after being subsequently bitten by them. Kendrick knows this to be true but has a hard time coping with it. Such emotion causes the reader to feel tension and sympathy for Kendrick. Unfortunately, Grandpa Joe, who takes care of Kendrick, gets bitten as well. With no one to care for him Kendrick must learn to survive on his own. At this point, our primary concern is for Kendrick's well being. How will he survive without Grandpa Joe? Unfortunately, Barnes and Due leave this subject open to interpretation. The story ends with Kendrick confronting Grandpa Joe. Such and abrupt ending leads the audience to question how Kendrick fared in this hellish world. Also, we are left to question whether Kendrick actually kills Grandpa Joe.
